Drawing 1: Single Object Drawings

For this project, students create a two drawing series of the same object using Graphite and Charcoal Pencil with a focus on composition, value range and volume.

Warm-up

Students draw crumpled post-it notes as a warm-up activity. This helps them to recall their prior knowledge about observational drawing and drawing materials as well as to practice drawing and shading. The first drawing in the series is my demonstration that I did for the students while talking them through the process.

Guided Discussion and Demonstration

Students participate in guided discussion while looking at finished drawings from previous years. They respond to leading questions in order to stay engaged and thinking about composition. Students are encouraged to identify compositional strategies throughout the presentation. Next they watch and participate in a compositional sketching demonstration.

In-process drawings

After completing four compositional sketches, students begin working on their final. We discussed constructive drawing techniques such as finding axis, drawing geometric shapes and drawing shapes as transparent objects. The first drawing is my demonstration with a photo of my object for context. All of the drawings are from life.
